In a July address, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced a bumper cash injection for digital projects in the NHS.
Amounting to £412.5m over the next three years, he highlighted GS1 UK’s barcoding technology as an example of successful digitisation in practice.
The NHS released its Five Year Forward View strategy in 2014, in which it stated that technology would be a key enabler to reduce pressure on services and continue to provide high-quality care in the UK.
One part of this wide-ranging initiative was the provider digitisation programme, which sought to fund health and care organisations use of technology, and which has recently been allocated.
In the NHS, GS1 standards are enabling the unique identification of every person, every product and every place to help staff improve patient safety, reduce unwarranted clinical variation and enable operational efficiencies. Scanning accurate and verified data once to be used many times could help the NHS save millions of pounds and thousands of lives every year.
