Who we are

Who we are

Our purpose is to harness the power of standards
to transform the way people work and live.

We’re a community of more than 56,000 members working in retail, healthcare and other sectors.

We’re one of 116 neutral, not-for-profit, and independent GS1 organisations operating across 150 countries for the benefit of our members. And we harness the power of GS1 standards to transform the way people work and live.

That means that from product barcodes to patient wristbands, our standards have the power to deliver change now and in the future. Through initiatives like patient safety programmes and deposit return schemes, they’re driving efficiencies in supply chains and transparency in wider society.

Our three-year strategy

Growth with purpose, our strategic plan, reflects our commitment to deliver sustainable growth to support our members, UK plc and wider society.

We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation governed by a supervisory body of elected members.

Our president

Meet the Right Honorable Lord Philip Hunt PC OBE is member of the House of Lords and President of GS1 UK.

Our board

Elected by members, our board of industry experts oversees our strategies and budgets, and keeps us on track for the future.

Our leadership team

The leadership team, headed by Chief Executive Anne Godfrey, is responsible for the day-to-day running of GS1 UK.

Our history

We’ve come a long way since Norman Joseph Woodland sketched the first barcode in the Florida sand in 1948.

Our charity

We are proud to support The Honeypot Children’s Charity in the amazing work they do for young carers.

Our annual review

It’s been an extraordinary year in which we have supported our members and stakeholders while continuing to deliver our purpose.
