Alibaba Group invites brand owners to adopt GS1 standards

The world’s largest retailer is now using GS1 standards for identification and product information management

GS1 standards are increasingly used on online marketplaces – helping shoppers to find, compare and buy products more easily. eBayAmazon and Google Shopping all use GS1 product identifiers to help manage their vast product catalogues. And now, the Alibaba Group, the largest online and mobile trading market in the world, has recognised that the adoption of GS1 standards is an essential requirement for trade.

Alibaba runs various online and mobile platforms, covering retail, wholesale and cloud computing. There are 423 million active buyers on the retail platform of Alibaba Group.

And recently, the Group invited brand owners to adopt GS1 standards for product information management and to use Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN) for uniquely identifying their products for global e-commerce. And going even further, all Alibaba users are encouraged to join the GS1 Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) for online exchange of product information.

By inviting brand owners to adopt our standards, Alibaba Group recognises the huge benefits that standards can bring to them. These include managing their supply chain efficiently, complying with laws and regulations for accurate product information, meeting the demands for consumer transparency, strengthening brand integrity and improving the consumer experience.
