The Clavis 2017 EMEA eCommerce Accelerator Summit

Spreading the word on Digital DNA, Mobile Ready Hero Images and GS1 SmartSearch

GS1 UK presented a number of new industry initiatives at the recent Clavis 2017 EMEA eCommerce Accelerator Summit. First up was our new Solutions Director, Kim Ludlow, who presented the latest on Digital DNA. The programme started when the GS1 UK Retail Grocery Advisory Boardmet and discussed the common problems they were facing – which they soon agreed was poor quality and inconsistent product data.

Which is we’ve been working with an increasing number of leading retailers and brands to develop an industry-wide solution that enables retailers and suppliers to share high quality product data. Kim explained that the latest milestone was the communication of the Digital DNA Industry Charter, signed by 12 leading retailers and brands, detailing how they are all working towards the delivery of an industry-owned and industry-managed solution in April 2018.

Following Kim, the GS1 UK Head of Standards and Consulting, Paul Reid, presented Mobile Ready Hero Images – a new GS1 industry programme to help develop guidelines for online product images. Paul explained that as more and more people are using smartphones or tablets to shop online, they’re increasingly dependent on images to compare products. Today, products are displayed in a variety of ways across different websites and companies, which can confuse customers and potentially result in lost business for brands and retailers.

As part of the Mobile Ready Hero Images programme, Unilever recently donated their research to GS1 as a basis for an industry-led initiative, to help produce guidelines on how to implement better and more consistent images across online retail channels, specifically on small-screened devices.

Finally, Paul explained the benefits of GS1 SmartSearch, a new web vocabulary that makes it easier for shoppers to find, compare and buy products online, and enabling website owners to describe products in richer detail.
