eBay explains the importance of listing with GS1 GTINs

During the past few years, the marketplaces team at GS1 UK have been working with the leading online marketplaces, to bring awareness to GS1 standards like the GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and to increase their adoption.

We have been able to demonstrate how products listed with the correct GTINs provide marketplaces with more clarity on what’s in their catalogue, highlighting duplication and counterfeit items. By using the GTIN in their listings, sellers have also experienced growth in their businesses from an increase in traffic and consumer confidence.

Back in 2016, eBay began to roll out new changes to mandate the GTIN across all their categories. Today, the GTIN is the principal product identifier required by many of the global online marketplaces.

As part of our campaign focusing on the GS1 GTIN, we spoke to Emma Grant, head of seller experience at eBay Europe. Emma talks more about the GTIN’s key benefits, including:

  • Increased SEO results
  • Making the listings process easier and more standardised
  • Enabling a “horizontal experience” for buyers through reviews and better personalisation
