Step by step guides to the two methods

You can simply allocate GTIN-13s to any packaging levels.

Numbered

To do this, go into a new, previously unused GTIN-13.

Numbered

In 'Product Description', add details of the packaging level you wish to identify, including the quantity of the content.

Numbered

Head to the 'Additional Information' tab.

Numbered

In the 'Packaging Level' field, specify whether your item is a pack or a case.

Completing the 'Product Description' and 'Packaging Level' fields will probably be sufficient to identify your packs and cases, but you can complete more of the attributes if you wish.

We recommend that you don’t share packs or cases to the Verified by GS1 (VbG) service, as VbG is primarily for customers and retailers to check information about the base unit, typically the consumer item which can be bought in store or online.

Follow the steps below to create a GTIN-14 for packaging levels using My Numberbank.

Numbered

To create a GTIN-14 you first need to have assigned a GTIN-13 to the point-of-sale or base item, otherwise the ‘view’ option won’t appear.

Numbered

Once the GTIN-13 has been assigned correctly, click ‘view’

Numbered

You’ll see a new page load which contains the GTIN-14s you can create from that GTIN-13.

Numbered

Click directly on to one of the numbers and add a description which details what the packaging level contains. Make sure you add the quantity of the content too.

The first digit (1-8) of a GTIN-14 does not indicate what packaging level it is identifying. These numbers have no meaning, so you can allocate GTIN-14s however you like.

Please note, GTIN-14s beginning with 9 are reserved for boxes of variable measure things, for example, cuts of cheese or lengths of cable so please don’t use them for cases of fixed weight items.
