Snowdon Timber building a sustainable future through marketplaces and GS1 standards

Snowdon Timber is a fast-growing family business that has carved out a niche in the UK’s competitive timber market. Founded in 2019 by Jody Goode, the company began as a small local timber merchant with a clear mission: to deliver high-quality, sustainable and affordable timber products to both trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts.

Drawing on a background in technical engineering and timber trading, Jody recognised a gap in the market for well-sourced, fairly priced timber that could be delivered quickly and reliably. What started as a regional operation soon evolved into a digital-first business. Today, Snowdon Timber is a well-established name in the UK timber industry, with more than 95 per cent of its sales coming from online channels. The company has expanded rapidly, focusing on e-commerce and marketplace platforms to reach a national audience.

Expanding through B&Q Marketplace

A major milestone came in 2023 when Snowdon Timber joined B&Q Marketplace. The partnership gave the company access to one of the UK’s largest home-improvement audiences and enabled its products, including decking boards, fencing and construction timber, to reach customers nationwide.

“B&Q has been a reliable partner,” says Jody. “We’ve had a great experience with the platform, offering our products to a broad audience in the UK.”

Snowdon Timber ran a targeted campaign featuring its premium decking boards

The impact was immediate. During the summer home-improvement season, Snowdon Timber ran a targeted campaign featuring its premium decking boards. The result was a 40 per cent increase in sales, with decking products accounting for more than 60 per cent of seasonal sales. Overall, the business saw a 50 per cent uplift in sales during key seasonal peaks.

B&Q’s platform proved easy to navigate, with responsive seller support and tools that helped improve visibility and order management. The company’s strong reputation for quality and customer trust aligned well with Snowdon Timber’s brand values, making it the most important sales channel and now responsible for around 70 per cent of total turnover.

Strengthening operations with GS1 UK

As Snowdon Timber expanded across multiple marketplaces, the need for accurate product identification and consistent data management became critical. Listing hundreds of products online required a reliable system to ensure every item was traceable, compliant and correctly represented.

Joining GS1 UK provided the solution. By adopting GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers and barcodes, Snowdon Timber gained a universal system for identifying and tracking products across all platforms.

“GS1 UK has helped streamline our barcode management,” says Jody. “It’s strengthened our credibility with major retailers and made product tracking more accurate.”

GS1 standards have enabled Snowdon Timber to reduce listing errors, improve warehouse and inventory efficiency and integrate seamlessly with digital tools for logistics and reporting. This has been vital for managing the rapid growth in online orders and maintaining consistency across channels.

Lessons from marketplace growth

Jody believes marketplaces are a powerful equaliser for small and medium-sized businesses. They allow smaller brands to compete with much larger players, if you understand how to use data, optimise your listings and keep customer experience front and centre.

From Snowdon Timber’s experience, Jody shares several lessons:

Jody Goode, founder of Snowdon Timber

  • Optimise listings with clear images and concise descriptions to improve visibility
  • Stay responsive to customer questions and reviews to build trust
  • Manage stock levels in real time to avoid running out during peak seasons
  • Embrace data standards early to scale across multiple channels with confidence
  • Stay agile and adapt your product mix as market trends shift
  • Be prepared for logistical challenges and act quickly to resolve them
  • Monitor cash flow closely and plan for seasonal fluctuations

These lessons have helped Snowdon Timber maintain a strong reputation for reliability and service, even as order volumes have increased.

A multi-channel strategy

While B&Q remains the cornerstone of Snowdon Timber’s digital sales, the company also operates successfully on Amazon and eBay, each serving different customer segments.

On Amazon, Snowdon Timber benefits from vast reach and high visibility. The platform supports a broader product range, including accessories and complementary items. A recent campaign saw a 30 per cent increase in decking board sales over a single quarter.

“Amazon’s reach is invaluable,” says Jody. “It’s an essential part of our long-term growth strategy.”

On eBay, Snowdon Timber connects with price-sensitive customers through bundled offers and seasonal promotions. A Christmas discount campaign led to a sharp increase in sales, and the company continues to expand its range to suit eBay’s value-driven audience.

Each platform plays a distinct role in Snowdon Timber’s strategy, complementing the premium positioning achieved through B&Q’s curated marketplace.

Looking to the future

With demand continuing to rise, Snowdon Timber is planning the next stage of its growth. The company intends to expand its warehouse and logistics facilities, invest in digital systems to streamline fulfilment and explore export opportunities across Europe.

Sustainability remains a core focus. Snowdon Timber is committed to sourcing responsibly and minimising environmental impact through efficient production and packaging processes.

“Customers are increasingly aware of where their materials come from,” says Jody. “We want to be part of that positive change.”

GS1 UK membership will continue to support this growth. With a unified product-identification system and trusted data, Snowdon Timber can expand into new markets and partnerships while maintaining the accuracy and integrity that major retailers require.

“Marketplaces are the future of retail,” Jody concludes. “With GS1 UK supporting our data standards and B&Q providing an incredible platform for growth, the possibilities for Snowdon Timber are endless.”
