Positive patient identification is a fundamental component of safe, effective healthcare. Using GS1 standards specifically the Global Service Relation Number (GSRN), NHS Trusts can improve the accuracy, efficiency and traceability of patient interactions across the entire patient pathway.
A GSRN-encoded patient identification band ensures that each patient can be uniquely and consistently identified at every point of care. When integrated with the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), this supports seamless data capture, safer clinical decisions and better outcomes.
Currently, 53% of NHS Trusts in England—based on 139 Trusts—have implemented a compliant GSRN identification band. Adoption of GS1 standards continues to grow as Trusts recognise the value of Scan4Safety principles and the efficiencies enabled by standards-based digital healthcare.
What is a GSRN?
The Global Service Relation Number (GSRN) is a GS1 identifier used to uniquely identify individuals receiving a service—in this case, patients. The GSRN can be encoded into a GS1 barcode printed on a patient identification band and linked to their NHS number.
Why is the GSRN important for the NHS?
A compliant GSRN identification band is central to enabling:
- Positive patient identification: ensures the right care is delivered to the right patient
- Interoperability: enables data to be captured and shared across systems and providers using a global standard
- Automation: reduces manual data entry, saving time and reducing the risk of human error
How does it connect with the EPR?
When a GSRN identification band is scanned at the point of care, it automatically retrieves or updates the patient’s electronic record.
This real-time data exchange supports:
- Safer prescribing and medicines administration
- Accurate tracking of blood and samples
- More effective bed management
- Immediate action in the case of product recalls
- Reporting to national registries and outcome datasets
What are the use cases for GSRN identification bands?
The GSRN-encoded patient identification band support multiple clinical and operational workflows, including:
- Point of care scanning to match patient, product and procedure
- Medicines management, ensuring accurate administration
- Blood management, matching patient to sample or product
- Bed management, automating location tracking
- Product recalls, identifying who received what, when and where
- National outcome registries, supporting accurate reporting
What’s next?
As more NHS organisations embark on their own Scan4Safety journeys, the focus remains on establishing a strong foundation with the three core enablers. A compliant GSRN identification band is the first step towards a digitally connected NHS—improving safety, reducing errors, and delivering better patient care.
