Creating a subdomain varies by hosting provider, but it's generally simple. Follow these steps but if you're unsure about any step, your hosting provider’s support documentation or customer service can provide specific instructions tailored to their platform.

Step 1: Log In to your hosting account

Begin by logging into your hosting provider’s control panel. This is the area where you manage all aspects of your website, including domain settings.

Step 2: Locate the domain or subdomain section

Look for a section in your hosting dashboard related to Domains or Domain Management. This might also be labeled as Subdomains, DNS Management, or Website Settings. The exact wording will depend on your provider, but it’s typically easy to find.

Step 3: Create the subdomain

Once you've located the appropriate section, you’ll typically see an option to create a new subdomain.

The steps may vary, but generally, you will:

  • Choose the Primary Domain:
    • If you have multiple domains on your account, select the primary domain under which you want to add the subdomain.
  • Enter the Subdomain Name:
    • In the field provided, enter the name of the subdomain. For example, if you want a blog at blog.yourdomain.com, enter "id".
  • Select a Directory (Optional):
    • Some hosting providers will ask you to choose a directory where the subdomain’s files will be stored. If you want the subdomain to point to a specific folder, enter or select the folder name. Often, a default folder is created automatically based on the subdomain name.
  • Create the Subdomain:
    • After entering the necessary details, click the Create button (or equivalent). This will set up the subdomain on your hosting account.

Step 4: Configure DNS settings (if necessary)

In some cases, your hosting provider may require you to set up DNS records for your new subdomain. DNS (Domain Name System) records help direct traffic to the correct location.

  • Go to DNS Settings
    • Look for a section labeled DNS Management or Zone Editor in your hosting dashboard.
  • Add a New DNS Record:
    • You may need to add an A record or CNAME record to point your subdomain to the correct IP address or server. The most common settings are:
      • A Record: Points your subdomain to an IP address.
      • CNAME Record: Points your subdomain to another domain (e.g., another website or service).
  • Save Changes:
    • After adding the appropriate DNS record, save your changes. It may take some time (up to 48 hours) for the new DNS settings to propagate across the internet.

Step 5: Setup product specifics

Now that your subdomain is created, you can manage product specific redirects using your website.

Troubleshooting tip:

Remember that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate. If the subdomain doesn’t work immediately, be patient and try again later.

This configuration is a one-time procedure. Once the subdomain and DNS settings are established, it is unnecessary to repeat this process for each individual product-specific QR code generated. Each subsequent QR code may utilise the pre-established subdomain to direct to the appropriate product information.
