GTINs now available for every OPCS-4 code

Trusts can now improve and support clinical coding by scanning OPCS barcodes at the point of care

The GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) to OPCS-4 code cross reference file is now available from NHS Digital. This gives a GTIN for every OPCS-4 code, as well important guidance about their creation and management.

Trusts looking at adopting additional Scan4Safety use cases will now be able to use GS1 standards to scan OPCS codes at the point of care. This will allow for quick scanning as care is being delivered, meaning Trusts have accurate data to support clinical coding. It will also improve the interoperability of defining standards between clinical and non-clinical systems.

Some Trusts are already seeing the benefits - Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been recording OPCS codes at point of care and the increased accuracy this gives has helped them earn over £1m extra a year in income from commissioners. If you’d like to find out more about how your Trust can get started, and how we can help, get in touch with the GS1 UK Healthcare Team.
