The latest version of our General Specifications – the core standards document of the GS1 System – is now available. In the January 2015 edition the following areas have been updated:
- Fish traceability
To support the labelling requirements for fish traceability, several new Application Identifiers (AI) have been added as well as the expansion in the use of an existing one (AI 703)
- Coupon management
The GS1 US Coupon Code Identification for use in North America (U.P.C. Prefix 5) has been removed
Also the Application Identifiers for the GS1 US Coupon Extended Bar Code (AI (8100), (8101), (8102)) have been removed, due to the implementation GS1 DataBar Expanded symbols for coupons in North America
Two existing Application Identifiers - Expiry Date and Value - are now able to be expressed in combination with the Global Coupon Number (GCN)
- GS1 QR Code
All applications where GS1 DataMatrix was already permitted now also support GS1 QR code, except for Regulated Healthcare Trade Items
- GS1 DataBar
This barcode is now also included in general distribution applications
- Direct Part Marking
Application expanded to include additional industries such as lumber and toys
- GS1 Logistics Label
The label design section has been updated making it easier to understand, more consistent and better aligned with other parts of the General Specifications
- GTIN Rules
The ‘disclaimer’ stating that local regulations supersede the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) Allocation Rules has been harmonised
- Healthcare Human Readable Interpretation (HRI) rules
Rules have been added to address situations where information cannot be included as HRI on a package due to package size and other limitations
- Symbol Specification Tables
Removed the tolerances columns and added a new sub-section on acceptance criteria.
Aligned the quality measurement wavelength, to use when verifying, from 670 nm to 660 nm
Where necessary, corrected the verification aperture size
- GTIN Allocation Rules
A new version of the GS1 Healthcare GTIN Allocation Rules is now available
The GTIN Allocation Rules webpage has been updated due to some errata
