CareScan+ (North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust)
North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated hospital and community services healthcare provider based in the North East of England serving around 400,000 people in Hartlepool, Stockton and parts of County Durham. In 2018 the Trust was rated “Good” from the independent health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with elements of it’s A&E services being rated “Outstanding”.

Contact information
In 2016, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust were selected by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to become one of only six demonstrator sites tasked with the implementation of the Scan4Safety programme, which was focused on improving patient safety, enabling clinical productivity and driving supply chain efficiencies.
CareScan+ is a point of care (POC) scanning solution designed and developed by the trust to support the Scan4Safety requirements and can be used to track and trace products used by staff during the delivery of care to patients. The data collected will facilitate an immediate response to both patients and care providers in the event of a product recall. CareScan+ can also identify unwarranted variation that can cause inefficiency and risk, so that these elements can be targeted and eradicated to enable changes in clinical practise if necessary, as well as provide organisations with an enhanced level of patient safety.
CareScan+ can provide NHS healthcare organisations with a quick, easy and accurate means of collecting quality data in a consistent manner and facilitates the instant reporting of this data via its reporting suite. This assists NHS organisations by shining a light on their data blind spots which can help in making better business intelligent decisions.
Data insights that can be gathered using CareScan+:
- Patient details (positive patient ID)
- Care provider/s (staff present during procedure)
- Location of procedure (can identify actual theatre suite and hospital site)
- Timestamp of procedure (start and end times)
- Products/instrument trays/medical devices used during procedure (incl. batch/lot and expiry date, for easier traceability)
- Procedure type
- Wastage
- Accurate costing for PLICS (Patient Level Information and Costing Systems)
CareScan+ has been designed in conjunction with clinicians and is “Built by the NHS, for the NHS”.
