Help shape future standards

GS1 standards create a common foundation for business by uniquely identifying, accurately capturing, and automatically sharing vital information about products, locations, assets and more.

Help shape future standards

Developed through the Global Standards Management Process (GSMP), they are constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of industry and consumers alike.

The GSMP is a community-based forum that enables businesses to work together to develop standard-based solutions that work for all. It consists of active participants from 60 countries representing a wide range of industries and sectors who ensure that essential information is accessible, accurate, easy to understand.

GS1 is developing two key standards that have the potential to revolutionise the retail and marketplace sectors. Join our global community today and play a part in shaping the future of:

2D barcodes in retail

2D barcodes in retail

For over 50 years, GS1 standards have supported the use of barcodes to boost supply chain efficiencies around the world. Now, new standards and guidance are required to realise the full potential of 2D barcodes and the significant amount of information they can hold.

To face this challenge, a special GSMP working group has been developed to address:

  • Enable scaled interoperability across global retail systems for processing 2D barcodes and the data they contain
  • Decrease the number of barcodes required on retail point-of-sale (POS) packages to achieve business goals
  • Provide guidance on how to use specific data (e.g., batch/lot, expiration, sell-by date) to meet retail business needs
  • Define rules for barcode quality, size, placement, and best practices
  • Support standardised, human-readable text on-pack

Modernisation of GTIN Management

The future of retail is in now firmly in the hands of consumers. While online marketplaces and ecommerce sites have been transforming traditional business models for years, COVID-19 and growing consumer demand for simple, dependable, and transparent product data, have accelerated the need for change. As commerce becomes more complex, so does the need for consistent identification of products.

Industry is now driving the evolution of GS1 standards, highlighting the need for greater clarity on rules for the assignment and management of product identity. While this work has been driven by the marketplace ecosystem, we expect its far-reaching implications will impact many sectors and stakeholders — both online and in traditional physical commerce channels.

In response to these seismic shifts, we invite you to participate in the modernisation of GTIN management. Join our GSMP focus group to make product identification simpler and more effective.

Collaborate with industry peers to help build, adapt and/or clarify standards to accommodate for:

  • Product variations
  • Bundles
  • White label products
  • Refurbished products

To find out more and how to join, see our ‘Modernisation of GTIN Management call to action’.
