If you’re using a QR code powered by GS1 on retail packaging for point of sale (POS), size and clarity are key. A QR code that’s too small or blurry may not scan correctly at checkout.

Here’s what you need to know when you’re generating your QR code in My Numberbank, which now gives you Low, Medium, or High image quality options instead of the typical GS1 “X-dimension” size options.

Magnifying glass

Minimum module width (X-dimension): 0.396 mm

Magnifying glass

Minimum overall printed size: 14.6mm × 14.6mm
(This includes the “quiet zone” border around the symbol)

Magnifying glass

Minimum overall printed size: 11.48mm × 11.48mm
(Excluding the quiet zone, measuring between the furthest squares)

Printing larger (e.g., 20–25mm) may improve scanning performance, so treat these as minimums, not targets.

My Numberbank doesn’t let you set a module width directly. Instead, it lets you choose an image quality:

  • Low – not suitable for packaging
  • Medium – okay for simple uses, not recommended for POS
  • High – recommended for all POS QR codes

Choosing High ensures the symbol contains enough detail to stay sharp when you resize it to GS1’s minimum printed size.

Numbered

Download your QR code from My Numberbank using “High” image quality.

Numbered

Place it into your packaging artwork (Illustrator, InDesign, Canva, etc.)

Numbered

Resize the symbol proportionally until the printed size of the QR (including the quiet zone) is at least 14.6mm × 14.6mm

Numbered

Make sure the quiet zone stays clear—no logos, colours, or text inside it

Numbered

Print a sample and check that one module is ≥ 0.396 mm wide

Test it with a barcode verifier or use GS1 barcode check service

If the GTIN is included beneath your QR code (called the human readable interpretation or HRI), it should not be factored into the measurement of your QR code.

Tip: Use the vector (.eps) version for best results

For packaging artwork, it’s best to provide your designer with the .eps vector version of the QR code.

They can then size the symbol accurately by adjusting the width of the individual modules (the black and white squares) to match the recommended 0.396mm X-dimension.

Most desktop publishing tools allow the designer to measure this directly. helping ensure your QR code will meet GS1’s minimum POS size.
