Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Get answers to some of our most common questions regarding the changes to productDNA.

Why is the productDNA platform changing?

The productDNA platform was licensed to GS1 UK by a third-party vendor. As that contract expired GS1 UK used the opportunity to explore other service providers to develop the productDNA proposition and maximise its value to the industry. After extensive consideration we have selected a new platform partner, Syndigo, who has taken over the sales, support and operational management of productDNA.

Will GS1 UK remain involved with productDNA?

GS1 UK will be closely involved in the governance of productDNA and remain focused on enabling industry collaboration to assist in the delivery of business value through productDNA and our standards.  It is the firm intent of GS1 UK to ensure that productDNA continues to evolve over the coming years, while maintaining the best interests of productDNA subscribers and GS1 UK members. This will be through our close contractual partnership with Syndigo, and through our Service governance group. The latter is a cross-industry forum, co-chaired by GS1 UK, which will guide the future direction and functionality of the productDNA service.

What happens to my current productDNA contract?

If you are a paid subscriber, you have a productDNA contract with GS1 UK. At the end of its current term, or if you choose to accelerate the contract transition, the GS1 UK contracts will be terminated, and a replacement contract will need to be agreed with Syndigo in order to perpetuate access to the service.

If you are a Freemium subscriber, you will be asked to terminate your contract with GS1 UK in the coming weeks and sign a new freemium agreement directly with Syndigo.

The terms of the paid and freemium contracts do not differ significantly to those you have currently agreed with GS1 UK.

What about my product data?

On acceptance of the new freemium contract, your HFSS data which has been previously shared with one or more retailers will be uploaded into the Syndigo productDNA platform automatically. We ask that you then check and confirm all data is present in the platform. It can then be edited, added to and shared at your convenience.

Who will help me with the transition?

You will receive links to online tutorials and materials guiding you through the transition. However, if you need additional help, you can contact the GS1 UK support team.  Between now and the 30 June 2023, Syndigo will assume increasing responsibility for all operational aspects of productDNA including support.

Will the data model change?

No. A key aspect of productDNA is the shared product data model, based on GS1 standards, to which all participating retailers have agreed. The same data model underpins all attributes used in the new productDNA platform.

Are all the retailers moving to the new platform?

We anticipate all the retailers will retain their subscriptions to productDNA and will be moving to the new Syndigo platform over the coming weeks. However, some retailers will be requesting HFSS data through their portals until they transition their new line form process to productDNA. It is the subscribing retailers' ultimate ambition to source new line form and legislative data through productDNA.

What should I do now?

Nothing, until GS1 UK and/or Syndigo contact you with instructions on how to onboard into the new productDNA platform.

I subscribe to productDNA and upload data via GDSN. What do I do next?

GS1 UK and Syndigo will be contacting you individually to discuss the optimal process and timing to redirect your GDSN connection, and transfer your commercial agreement.
