What is GSMP all about?
The Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) is an essential platform within GS1, enabling members to collaborate on developing and refining global standards. By participating in GSMP, members can engage in various working groups, submit Work Requests to propose changes or new standards, and stay informed about industry initiatives. Whether you are aiming to address specific business challenges or contribute to the continuous improvement of GS1 standards, GSMP offers a structured and inclusive approach for your involvement.
I have identified a need for a change in the standards, what do I need to do?
If you have identified the need for a change or new standard due to gaps in GS1 standards, new industry requirements that are not yet covered or regulatory changes required an update, you can submit a Work Request (WR), the official proposal to GS1 via GSMP.
The Work Request is the first step toward change and should cover the following key discussions regarding the proposed action or change:
What business challenges or problems is the industry facing, and what is the business impact?
What is the proposed action or change?
Who will be impacted?
Any implementation risk?
Timeline?
You don't have to work alone on the Work Request.
Contact us to share your business challenges, and we will work with you and convene other industry players who may benefit from the change.
Industry collaboration is crucial for the GSMP approval process.
The Work Request template is available can be found on the GS1 website and submitted through the GSMP portal.
Once you have submitted a Work Request:
The submitted Work Request will be reviewed by GS1.
Once a Work Request is accepted, it may lead to the creation of a Mission Specific Work Group (MSWG) or be assigned to an existing Standards Maintenance Work Group (SMG).
Alongside you, GS1 UK will actively participate in the workgroup, join discussions, provide feedback, and contribute expertise to help shape the standard.
The proposed changes will go through multiple reviews and iterations to allow GS1 members to reach consensus around the changes or new creation. GS1 members will vote to approve or reject changes before they become official.
Once approved, the new or revised standard is published by GS1 and GS1 members can adopt and integrate the standard into their business operations.
