The goal is clear: by the end of 2027, retail point-of-sale (POS) systems globally should be capable of reading and processing both legacy and 2D barcodes.

To support this transformation, GS1 has developed a set of self-assessment criteria that solution providers can use to evaluate the readiness and compliance of their products and services. These criteria are grounded in GS1 standards and guidelines, ensuring that 2D barcodes can be printed, positioned, scanned, verified, and linked to digital information in a way that is robust, interoperable, and scalable across the retail ecosystem.

This document outlines those criteria, helping solution providers demonstrate alignment with GS1’s global vision while maintaining the flexibility to innovate and differentiate based on their unique capabilities.

By following these guidelines, providers can ensure their solutions are future-ready and trusted by brands and retailers worldwide.
