Using barcodes in the US

Since 2005, US businesses have been updating their systems to support GTIN‑13 and EAN barcodes from around the world. Most are now compliant with GS1 standards and can process EAN barcodes without issue.

However, a small number of organisations may still be unable to process all GTIN formats correctly.

If a US business specifically asks for a UPC, check whether they genuinely cannot accept EAN barcodes. Barcode terminology is often used inconsistently, and many systems can process GTIN‑13 even if a “UPC” is requested. Confirming this upfront can avoid unnecessary changes.

What this means for UK businesses:

  • In most cases, EAN barcodes can be used in the US without any problems
  • Don’t assume a UPC is required just because it’s requested - check system capability first
  • Only consider alternatives if the US business confirms they cannot process EAN barcodes

This approach helps you stay aligned with GS1 standards and avoid unnecessary relabelling or rework.
