Update to eBay’s product identifier requirements

eBay has released a reminder to its seller community that from the 29 February there will be more categories requiring GS1 GTIN product identifiers.

The requirements will now cover all single and multivariate listings for new, relisted, revised and Good ‘Til Cancelled listings of new and manufacturer-refurbished items.

You can find a full list of all those categories that are affected here

If you’re an eBay seller then don’t leave it too late – you should start using product identifiers now, to make sure you’re prepared. If you act quickly, your listings will benefit from a higher level of visibility in searches – both on eBay and on search engines.

You can find out if any of your listings require product identifiers using the listing improvements tool (My eBay > Selling > Listing improvements)  – as long as you’ve got this switched on.

This announcement signals the next phase in eBay’s move towards using structured data to improve the buyer’s experience across the site. eBay has stated that there will be increased functionality for sellers rolling out later in 2016. So far they’ve announced:

  • Merchandising advice
  • Special promotions
  • Listing inclusions in mail-outs to buyers
  • Product reviews added to listings in the eBay catalogue

If you’d like to know more about the product identifier requirements, eBay will be hosting a dedicated community chat on 12, 13 and 14 January from 1700 – 1800 GMT.
