Simplifying the exchange of product data in the NHS

Department of Health’s recent Demonstration of Technology shows how GS1's Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) will meet the requirements of the NHS

In a recent Demonstration of Technology (DoT), the Department of Health worked with a number of suppliers, catalogue service providers and NHS Trusts to show how GDSN can be used to simplify the exchange of quality product data between suppliers and the NHS.

Currently, suppliers receive multiple requests from Trusts for product data in different formats – causing inefficiencies, errors and duplicated work. GDSN enables a single process for suppliers and Trusts, and helps ensure the quality of the data. GDSN also enables the seamless machine-to-machine exchange of data between suppliers and Trusts – saving more time and money, and ensuring complete data accuracy.

It was great to demonstrate that we only needed to supply the data one time for multiple participants that all use different local systems. Publishing the same master product data once, to several trusts ensures higher data quality through consistency”

The DoT was considered a success by all the participants. Take a look at the published case study to see the results of the trial and the recommended next steps.

Suppliers to the NHS will be required to provide product data via a GDSN-certified data pool as part of the eProcurement strategy. This DoT is another successful step towards this goal.

The Demonstration of Technology successfully showed that there is great value, in terms of patient safety and operational efficiency benefits, in bringing to fruition a technology infrastructure that supports master data exchange. The Department of Health Scan4Safety programme will continue to drive towards adoption by the NHS and will seek to establish an infrastructure for the efficient and effective transfer of master data from suppliers to end users in NHS trusts.”
