TikTok Shop: selling successfully on social commerce

For UK SMEs who want a clean, discovery-led path to growth, stronger brand protection and fewer listing issues.

TikTok Shop: selling successfully on social commerce

On TikTok Shop, products are discovered rather than searched for. As its broad and highly engaged audience move quickly between entertainment, creator content and commerce, they’re introduced to new brands and products, even when they aren’t actively shopping.

For SMEs, this is invaluable. It allows them to compete through creativity and authenticity rather than scale. If content resonates, visibility can increase rapidly. For products that demonstrate well on video, it can be particularly impactful.

This discovery-led commerce rewards SMEs that understand their audience, create relatable storytelling and use authentic voices. For those that do, a compelling video can turn a moment of curiosity into a sale instantly.

You can also now sell cross-border to Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Ireland, with TikTok Shop expected to launch in more EU countries in the coming months.

GTINs

Reducing friction with GTINs

Already, TikTok Shop makes the leap between discovery and purchase frictionless, integrating catalogue, checkout and fulfilment within the same platform.

To streamline shopper journeys even further, TikTok Shop recommends that SMEs use unique Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) for each product and variant as they scale. This creates a single identity across packaging, GS1 records and the item you’re listing, supporting authenticity checks, reducing friction during approvals and strengthening brand protection. Crucially, consistent data builds trust across TikTok’s systems, creators and customers.

Getting started: the essentials

Remember, accurate, consistent product data underpins success on TikTok Shop:

  • Create identifiers: Assign a unique GTIN to every product and variant. Keep brand names identical across packaging, GS1 records and your TikTok Shop listings. This ensures your products pass platform checks smoothly Prepare your catalogue: Prepare clear titles, accurate descriptions, correct pricing and stock levels. Include strong images and video content. TikTok is built on visual storytelling, so compelling clips can improve performance
  • Tidy variants: Give each colour, size or format its own GTIN. Clean variants reduce catalogue errors, improve reporting and help customers navigate options easily
  • Create content that sells: Short videos, demonstrations, transformations, problem-solution formats and testimonials help customers understand your product in seconds. Livestreams allow direct engagement, real-time answers and higher conversion. Regular posting trains the algorithm and increases organic reach
  • Decide on your fulfilment model: Sellers can manage fulfilment in-house or use TikTok’s fulfilment service where available. Self-fulfilment offers flexibility but requires strong processes for picking, packing and returns. TikTok fulfilment can improve delivery performance and reduce operational pressure during spikes in demand

The money model

TikTok Shop uses a simple commission model, typically taking between five and ten per cent depending on the category. New sellers often benefit from reduced commissions or promotional incentives. Payment processing is included in this fee. Affiliate creators promote products and earn commissions per sale, giving SMEs cost-effective access to wider audiences. Paid advertising, such as Spark Ads, can accelerate momentum but is not required to achieve early success.

Tip: when modelling margins, include commission, fulfilment costs, VAT on fees, returns and creator commissions. Use live fee resources rather than static tables.

Checklist: core compliance areas

Before you go live, make sure you’ve checked each of the following to ensure compliance:

  • Check which categories require documentation, especially beauty, supplements, electronics and children’s items
  • Prepare safety reports, certifications or ingredient lists before listing
  • Ensure all pack information matches GS1 records and what appears in your TikTok Shop catalogue
A path to growth

A path to growth

First 30 days: Start with one hero product that performs well in video. Prove demand with small stock quantities and refine content quickly using metrics such as views, click-through rates, conversion and comments.

Next: Once stable, expand with variants and introduce new SKUs.

Remember: Discovery-driven platforms can create sudden spikes, so SMEs need to plan inventory carefully to keep up.

Taking the next step on TikTok Shop
