Streamlining for success on Temu with GTINs

For UK SMEs seeking volume growth and a simplified listing structure, Temu holds significant potential. Harnessing GTINs helps to unlock it.

Streamlining for success on Temu with GTINs

As one of the fastest-growing e-commerce platforms, Temu offers UK small businesses access to a vast pool of price sensitive consumers, drawn in by the platform’s model of aggressive pricing, high marketing investment and mobile-first shopping.

With a unique operating model that differs sharply from traditional marketplaces however, it requires a carefully tailored strategy built on robust data foundations, including the use of GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs).

Using trusted GS1 data to drive growth

Temu recommends the use of GS1 GTINs to support clean listings, accuracy in fulfilment and efficient catalogue management. While they’re aren’t mandatory, using unique GS1 identifiers for every product and variant helps ensure that any offer is attached to the correct product page, reducing listing friction and enabling smoother operations.

Clean identifiers also support accurate receiving, tracking and shipping, minimising delays and errors as your volume grows. Crucially, with GS1 identifiers in place, you spend less time fixing listings and more time serving customers. Those solid data foundations today also mean faster scaling tomorrow, on Temu and beyond.

So, here’s how to set yourself up for success.

Getting started: the essentials

  • Open your account: Temu onboarding is selective. SMEs apply as suppliers by providing business registration details, product catalogues, cost pricing, manufacturing or sourcing capabilities and compliance documentation. Approval is based on category fit, price competitiveness and supply capacity
  • Create identifiers: Assign a unique GS1 GTIN to every product and variant. Keep brand owner naming identical across packaging, GS1 records and your Temu listing, even though Temu prioritises products over brands
  • Select fulfilment: Temu typically manages international logistics, including cross-border shipping and customer delivery. Sellers may ship inventory to Temu designated warehouses or support cross-border fulfilment. Model costs using your production and logistics estimates
  • Prepare listings: Ensure product data is accurate and compliant with UK and EU standards. Listings should be clear, with high-quality images and complete attributes. Temu controls retail pricing, promotions and bundling, so SMEs must be comfortable operating with limited pricing autonomy

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Mismatched brand names across packaging, GS1 records and listings: even though Temu is product led, clean data prevents delays and disputes
  • Listing variants without unique GTINs: each colour, size or option should have its own identifier to avoid catalogue errors and simplify reporting
  • Committing inventory before category approvals are confirmed: Temu is selective on onboarding and product fit
The money model

The money model

Temu operates on a commission-based wholesale model. Sellers provide products at an agreed supply price and Temu sets the retail price.

Margins are generally lower than on Amazon, eBay or Shopify, but offset by volume potential. No advertising fees are charged. Temu controls promotions centrally.

Tip: before sending stock, model your margin by including commission, logistics, returns, VAT on fees and any Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations.

Checklist: core compliance areas

Make sure you double-check these areas before going live on the platform to ensure you’re fully compliant: o VAT on platform fees:

  • VAT reclaim depends on your VAT status
  • Extended Producer Responsibility: UK packaging EPR applies and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) may be relevant for electronics
  • Platform policies: Temu has specific category restrictions and upcoming changes. Check these before committing inventory
  • GTIN exemptions: while Temu may allow limited testing without GS1 identifiers, exemptions rarely suit scale. If you intend to grow across channels, start with GS1 GTINs

A path to growth

First 30 days: prove demand with a narrow range, collect reviews and fix friction fast using Temu’s supplier tools.

Next: expand variants after your hero SKU is proven. Keep identifiers and content tidy as you add options.

Remember: align data across Temu, other marketplaces and your website. Use GS1 identifiers to consolidate reporting and avoid duplicates.

Tailor your approach with Temu

Underpinned by a strong focus on value, Temu is primed for rapid growth here in the UK, making it an appealing option for SMEs looking to scale.

To benefit from its unique operating model though, it’s important to refine your strategy and ensure solid data foundations throughout, including the consistent use of GTINs
