If you want to list and sell a product on eBay, for most categories, you'll be asked to add a product identifier or barcode for eBay - usually a GTIN, UPC or EAN. GS1 is the only authorised provider of Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) – the number you see under the barcode that’s unique to that product.
Retailers have been using our Global Trade Item Numbers or GTINs to identify their products for 40 years - they’re the numbers you see under a barcode. Barcodes for eBay are no different, and can be used to uniquely identify all the information about specific products listed on the retailer site.
This is something that eBay needs from the seller so that they can improve the quality of their product catalogue. By doing this correctly, and assigning barcodes for eBay, sellers can help to maintain the high quality shopping experience buyers have come to expect from eBay.
Get a barcode in three simple steps
1. Sign up to GS1 UK
Sign up in minutes to access exclusive member benefits, including unique GTINs and barcodes for your products.
2. Log in to My GS1
Create new GTINs and barcodes, add and manage your product data and other GS1 identification numbers.
3. Start selling
Add barcodes to your physical products or your online listings and start selling straight away.
We verify the authenticity of product identifiers by checking the GS1 database. EANs/UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid. We recommend obtaining your product identifiers directly from GS1 (and not from other third parties selling EAN/UPC licences) to ensure that the appropriate information is reflected in the GS1 database."
