Highlights and summary of discussions

The forum delivered rich discussion and practical insights, with contributors emphasising the essential role of GS1 standards in driving safer, more efficient and more transparent healthcare supply chains.

Discussions highlighted the importance of unique device identification (UDI) for regulatory compliance, product traceability and data accuracy to improve operational efficiency, reduce in errors and improve patient safety.

Representatives from Leeds Teaching Hospitals shared first-hand experiences of using  GS1 standards in practice, focusing on the value of accurate product identification and the use of GS1-compliant barcodes for its Scan4Safety programme.

Leeds presenters demonstrated how  Scan4Safety is used across the trust to facilitate the efficient capture of data. Data is captured once via a simple scan, in real time, where it is then used many times, at the point of care to support the patient pathway.

Participants explored how UDI and Scan4Safety aligns with national strategic drivers such as the NHS 10-Year Health Plan, the NHS England commercial strategy, the Cumberlege review (First Do No Harm) and the Department of Health and Social Care’s Medtech strategy.

NHS organisations presented case studies demonstrating the tangible benefits of GS1 adoption, such as optimised inventory management, improving value- based procurement and quicker, more accurate patient recalls.

Leeds brought the impact to life with an example of a contact lens safety alert. More than 500 patients were identified in less than 40 minutes using Scan4safety. Within six weeks, the trust had reviewed all patients and proved clear of any adverse outcome.

GS1 global showcased the pilot with Google Lens, showcasing the wider benefits of UDI to empower patients while supporting patient care and safety.

Key takeaways

  • GS1 standards are increasingly recognised as essential for ensuring patient safety, operational transparency and regulatory compliance in the UK medical devices sector
  • Medical device manufacturers and distributors have a significant role to play in supporting the strategic aims of the future digital healthcare
  • Effective implementation relies on cross-sector collaboration, ongoing education, and investment in digital infrastructure
  • Discussions emphasised the value of collaboration between manufacturers, distributors, healthcare providers and regulators to ensure seamless integration and interoperability
  • The forum reinforced the critical role of standardisation and digital innovation in transforming the medical devices supply chain and improving healthcare outcomes in the UK

We'd like to end by inviting medical device manufacturers and distributors to join the GS1 UK healthcare supplier adoption group.

The group serves to amplify the adoption of GS1 standards and support adherence to regulation such as UDI requirements for medical device regulations (MDR) and in-vitro diagnostic device regulations (IVDR).

The group meets quarterly, to discuss practical approaches to GS1 standards implementation and regulatory requirements, and to share best practice learnings to support adoption.

Its purpose is to:

  • Provide implementation support and guidance on using GS1 standards to meet requirements for UDI regulations
  • Engage with healthcare providers to accelerate the utilisation of GS1 standards adopted by suppliers
  • Support development of resources on how best to implement GS1 standards to meet healthcare requirements
