If you have a cylindrical product with a small diameter, however, such as a tube or a can, make sure that you position the barcode vertically. This will help account for lost width on the barcode as it curves around the product.

Which way up should a barcode be?
EAN/UPC barcodes are omnidirectional – that is, it doesn’t matter which way up they’re scanned. This means they can be placed in either a horizontal (‘picket fence’) or vertical (‘ladder’) position.
