Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust using Global Location Numbers to bring true interoperability to their location management

The Trust is implementing Global Location Numbers (GLNs) to manage their locations, laying the foundations for LocationManager when it’s introduced next year

Location numbering is one of the three core enablers that form part of the Department of Health’s (DH) eProcurement strategy. And as a demonstrator site, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust are making sure they’re on track with DH plans by introducing GLNs to manage over 6,715 locations in the Trust. Their previous way of working created extra work in a number of ways - room numbering conventions weren’t consistent, their different software systems used different references for the same locations and numbers were often attached to doors that were then moved.

The Trust is introducing GLNs as a way of managing their locations in a cost-effective and consistent way. The GLN offers a unique number for every location and will eventually allow the Trust’s property management system to route information to the other systems with no manual involvement.

Plymouth’s roll out means that once LocationManager – the national GLN registry - is launched next year, their data can be used to help populate this and they’ll be ready to go.
