Managing loan stock

How GS1 standards improve loan stock operations

GS1 standards can be used to improve the management of loan stock within the NHS. Barcoding and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology improves data accuracy – reducing administration time and providing better management control.

Loan stock describes a pool of equipment for use within the community. It covers a broad range of equipment types from low value risers through to high value, advanced pieces such as hospital beds and hoists. The equipment can be broadly described as any piece that enables a patient to be at home (either personal or a facility such as a care home) rather than in hospital.

GS1 standards can be used to identify all:

  • Loan stock equipment
  • Locations
  • Organisations
  • Staff
  • Patients
  • Products

Read our guidelines document (PDF) and learn how to use GS1 standards to ensure loan stock operations are run in the most effective and efficient way, ensuring value for money and delivering the best possible service for the patient.
