Meet Naturelly

NaturellyNaturelly is a family run business, offering a healthier alternative to sweets and chocolate for children.

Director Dean Dempsey, takes our Q&A session.

How and why did you start the business?

We launched Naturelly Jelly Juice in September 2015. Trying to find healthy snacks for our two daughter was always challenging for us. We needed an on the go refreshment that would fill them up just a little, until dinner time.

So, we put out heads together to find out the stuff that our kids and their friends loved and this led us to the idea of creating our Naturelly Jelly Juice.

How long have you been a GS1 member and do you use any of our services?

Since we launched in 2015. We use My Numberbank to create barcodes for all packaging needs.

Do you trade with any partners/channels?

Yes, we are a multichannel business, trading with Sainsburys, Ocado, Waitrose, plus wholesalers like Bidfood and Cotswold Fayre.

Naturelly image 2What is a typical day like for you?

I get up, get shouted at by my two daughters, take them to school every morning. After that there isn’t a typical day, every day is different.

What are the main pros and cons to running your own business?

The pros are being able to walk the kids to school in the morning and be there for them if needs be, when I finish work. 

But the con is the constant worrying about everything especially growth and working capital, but also is the price right, is the product right, is the packaging right, is the positioning right, how can I make more people aware…the brain never switches off!

What’s your biggest challenges for the business - what keeps you up at night?

Not letting my family down and then not letting the investors down. I'm constantly thinking about how we increase the rate of sales and how to raise funds for growth.

What are your plans for the business for the next 12 months?

We plan to maintain and grow the key listings that we have, and refresh the packaging of our core range. We want to start selling multipacks of four in retail and then launch new flavours and hopefully at least one new NPD.

I was the Greater Manchester Under 8’s athletics champion!

Kevin Bath at Jim Jams, Dom & Suzi at Primal Pantry, James Dawson at T-Plus, Nimisha Raja at Nims fruit crisps, Joe Taylor at Real Handful, Ed Woolner from POW and Joe Harper at Just Bee. All of them are fellow entrepreneurs on the same journey.

What top tip/piece of advice would you give to our other brands/sellers?

Try and raise more money than you think you’ll need. 
Try not to emotionally attached.
Think long term not short term...
Unfortunately I did neither of these things!
