Last week with great fanfare we announced details of productDNA:hub – a brand new transformative service that will offer a universal format for retailers and suppliers to share and manage product data and images.
But what’s really unique about productDNA:hub is that has been driven by the grocery retail industry for the grocery retail industry.
productDNA:hub has been established to address historical problems with inconsistent and inaccurate product data and images. The service addresses the concerns and need of the retail industry – theirs and no-one else’s.
GS1 UK has been developing productDNA:Hub over the past year in close co-operation with our retail industry partners to enable a universal format for retailers and suppliers to share and manage product data and images.
The point being, productDNA:Hub wouldn’t it be where it is today if it weren’t for the input and hard work of our industry partners.
And while we’re bullish that productDNA:hub will help reduce the historical problems with product data and images, we know that we’re not alone as some of the biggest grocery retail players are full of confidence as well.
And here’s what our industry partners had to say about productDNA:hub:
When adopted universally across the industry, productDNA:hub will give retailers increased confidence in the product data they receive, as well as helping to reduce the amount of inaccurate data and increasing the efficiency of our product data processing."
George Wright, Commercial Director, Fresh Food at Tesco
Mark Watson, Director of Planning & Supply Chain at Ocado, said: “Retailers and suppliers spend too much time on chasing, checking and rekeying product data. productDNA:hub delivers a single product data catalogue that we will all own and trust. It will mean we can focus on what’s really important to our businesses, delivering innovation and improving the customer experience.”
Marcus Dunsmore, Vice President Integrated Supply Chain at Mondelēz International, said that productDNA:hub is about enabling retailers and suppliers to deliver what the customer really wants. “productDNA:hub makes it easier to provide customers with accurate and consistent product information,” said Marcus Dunsmore. “This is especially important at a time when two million people in the UK have a food allergy and one in four shoppers use nutrition labels to make purchasing decisions. It’s essential the information they see is accurate and consistent, wherever and whenever they choose to shop.”
Aidan Tyers, Operations Director for itsu [grocery], said: “Our business has gone from strength-to-strength and a large part of this is because we have been selling our products beyond our own shops and into a variety of retailers. While this is a real positive for the business, we are sourcing goods from the global supply chain and with that comes a host of challenges, especially around accurate product data."
productDNA:hub is therefore absolutely vital for smaller suppliers too, enabling companies like ours to provide better quality product information to our customers and helping us to concentrate on other parts of the business, like the next strategy to grow the business.”

“We have many hundreds of products at Unilever which we supply to multiple retailers. Today, every retailer requests our product data in a different format, each using a different process. This complexity costs the industry time, money and resources,” said Richard Sadler, Customer Director, Unilever UK.
“That’s why MyProductDNA is such an important milestone for manufacturers and retailers alike. Providing independently verified data once, using a single industry-owned service will make a huge difference to the way we operate and for everyone in the industry.”
This support from our industry partners is absolutely vital for the success of productDNA:hub and as our own Chief Executive, Gary Lynch, said: “Only by working together has the industry finally been able to solve the problem with productDNA:hub, a single source of trusted product data and images for every retailer and supplier, including the smallest suppliers and start-ups.”
