Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust
Achieving operational and clinical benefits using GS1 UK accredited industry partner, Meditrax.
Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust uses GS1 UK accredited industry partner Meditrax to apply, via laser etching, unique identification marks to their equipment. By tagging each instrument, it is now possible to determine what product was used, when it was used and on which patient.
Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust provides care and community services for a community of more than 250,000. Across the Trust, there are around 700 different instrument sets, with up to 70 instruments in each set. The introduction of tagging was a significant logistical challenge, but made worthwhile by the operational and clinical benefits.
By working with GS1 UK, Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust have an accurate understanding of the number of instruments they have, where they have been used, by whom and which patients they have been used on.

With laser etching we can easily identify an individual instrument and when and where it has been used. Why is this important? It means that if a patient comes back later in life with an infection, we can prove that the instruments used on them were sterile."
