Standards for an efficient and profitable retail supply chain
Our relationship with the UK’s retail industry began over 30 years ago and has flourished ever since. By combining innovative technology with GS1 standards, the UK retail supply chain is one of the most efficient and profitable in the world. Our standards are used by retailers large and small, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, IKEA and Makro.
We helped the industry rollout the first truly global retail bar code numbering system – a system that’s still benefiting customers by making the retail point of sale process faster and improving stock control and on-shelf availability.
Today, GS1 UK covers much more than retail bar code standards. There are now standards for electronic business messaging, data synchronisation and retail RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).
We’re currently working with the UK retail industry on a number of initiatives, including:
- exploring how electronic retail security tags can be used to improve stock control and on-shelf availability in clothing stores
- improving the safety of products and food by making it easier to trace these items with better retail supply chains
- implementing a new smaller retail bar code that can carry extra information
