Point of sale (POS) scanning

Bar codes transformed retailing by making checkouts faster and more accurate. Our new bar code, GS1 DataBar, will bring even more benefits

Bar codes ensure your goods are sold at the right price, quickly and efficiently. When you have accurate sales data it means you can better control your stock and make sure your products are always available to buy. This all leads to better service and happier customers.

Not all products can be bar coded due to their size and shape – particularly fresh produce. This causes problems for retailers. But now a solution is available.

Introducing GS1 DataBar

GS1 DataBar is a new bar code that is smaller than existing GS1 bar codes. This means it can be used on a wider range of products, like apples, pears, tomatoes and other fresh produce.

By bar coding these items, you will get the same benefits you have enjoyed with other products for so many years such as:

  • improved stock control and less food waste
  • greater product availability
  • accurate pricing at the POS
  • faster checkout times and fewer queues
  • greater use of self-scan checkouts

You can use GS1 DataBar on other products too so there’s more space for branding, consumer information or regulatory requirements.

GS1 DataBar can also store more information including expiry dates, batch numbers, weights or prices. Retailers and manufacturers can use this innovation to build many new applications to bring new benefits to customers.

Can I use GS1 DataBar today?

GS1 DataBar becomes an open, global standard in 2014, meaning everyone can use it. In certain instances you can use it today, if agreement is reached between you and the retailers you trade with. You can find more information on the GS1 DataBar website.
