Automatic Identification and Data Capture - AIDC

Improve efficiency and patient safety with GS1 Standards

The use of the GS1 coding system has been approved by the Information Standards Board for Health and Social Care and will become a fundamental NHS standard for AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) including bar coding.

This standard provides the specification and implementation guidance for achieving accurate Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) using GS1 Internationl code numbering standards.

How does this affect me?

This mean that by 31 May 2012 individual NHS organisations in England will be required to adopt GS1 standards within their hospitals.

Benefits of using GS1 standards

  • Improve patient safety by:
    • matching the right patient to the right treatment
    • tracking medication so that patients receive the right dose at the right time

  • Saving moneythrough improved efficiency by:
