| The Global
Standards Management Process (GSMP) is the way that GS1 develops
and maintains its standards. It is an open and collaborative process
in which user companies express their business needs and work with
professional GS1 staff from around the world to develop standards
to meet those needs.
Development is carried out in specialist groups within
a managed framework. As the participants come from all over the
world, the work is done mainly through telephone conferences, webinars
and web-enabled discussion forums. Twice a year a “GSMP event”
brings participants together for face to face meetings.
Any GS1 UK member can request a new standard or change
to an existing standard via the GSMP website. It is best to contact
GS1 UK staff first because they can advise on framing a change request
to maximise its chance of success and can involve one of the GS1
UK expert groups to provide more support.
GS1 UK members that want to take part more fully in
standards development are always welcome. Participants can not only
influence the standards to be closer to their companies’ needs,
but also learn from like minded individuals, improve their understanding
of the trading partners’ needs, stay up-to-date with developments
and even have fun. Please contact the GS1 UK staff if you would
like to join one of the GSMP groups.
