EPCglobal pilot achieves visibility of goods on global level

Major land, air, sea and rail pilot successfully completed between China and the US

London, 11 June 2008 – EPCglobal Inc, a subsidiary of GS1, the global not-for-profit standards organisation, today announced the successful completion of the second phase of its Transportation and Logistics Services (TLS) Industry Action Group RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Pilot Programme. The transportation and logistics industry is facing key challenges related to supply chain efficiency and asset visibility, as well as safety and security initiatives, which EPC and RFID can address. The pilot programme has demonstrated unprecedented, real-time cargo visibility as goods flow between trading partners and logistics providers from mainland China to mainland US.

The second phase of the pilot, supported by The Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry (METI) in Japan and members of the Transportation and Logistic Industry Action Group, included two shipments of three containers, each carrying 40 pallets. The project involved the shipment of parts, such as tyres and finished goods, including laptops, moving from source factories in China to distribution centres in the US, flowing through the ports of Shanghai and Los Angeles.

The multi-stakeholder pilot involving several different industries provided extensive testing and validation of GS1 EPCglobal standards, specifically the EPCIS (EPC Information Services) standard which enables RFID sourced data exchange between trading partners.  It also drives the adoption of RFID technology and evaluating the usage of active and passive conveyance asset RFID tags.

“The use of EPCIS, coupled with the adoption and use of GS1 EPCglobal standards enables visibility across multiple business layers for stakeholders across global supply chains,” said Chris Adcock, President of EPCglobal Inc. “Companies can improve supply chain execution and cut costs through real-time asset management, while some retailers can increase revenue by reducing out of stock.”

“The TLS Global pilot has demonstrated that GS1 EPCglobal standards can facilitate the use of RFID technology in a collaborative supply chain,” said Tom Escott, president of Schneider Logistics. “The success of the pilot, despite the challenges of multiple supply chain stakeholders with disparate business conditions and technology platforms, helped define the ‘art of the possible’ from a transportation and logistics business value perspective.”

"The Transportation and Logistics Phase 2 Pilot Program is a milestone which demonstrates the interoperability of diverse active and passive tag technologies and providers, ensuring the best business value for supply chain operations," said George Cavage, iControl Inc.

The success of the second phase of the pilot has triggered the launch of Phase 3 which will involve more parts and finished products as well as additional trading partners from different regions.

About participants in the pilot:

The partners participating in the GS1 EPCglobal Pilot Program included major logistics, shipping, hardware and software providers such as Alien Technology, Allumis, Confidex, DHL, GlobeRanger, iControl Inc., Motorola, NEC, NTT, NTT Comware, NYK Logistics, Oracle, Sato, Savi a Lockheed Martin company, Schneider National, Sense Technology, Toppan Forms, Toppan Printing, UPM Raflatac. Additionally, active participants supporting the Transportation and Logistics Pilot Program were METI, NRI, MTI, and the GS1 Member Organisations from China, Hong Kong, Japan, and US.

About GS1 EPCglobal Standards:
GS1 EPCglobal standards are a set of integrated industry-driven standards which have been developed to meet user’s requirements enabling the identification of objects, data capture and sharing of information among partners throughout the supply chain. These standards are developed within the framework of EPCglobal Inc.

About EPCIS (EPC Information Services)
EPCIS is a standard used to track the progress of objects as they move through the supply chain. The data shared at each read point in the supply chain provides WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY of each read. EPCIS provides the Information Services necessary for the storage, communication and dissemination of EPC data. It provides standards event capture and query interfaces for obtaining and sharing data about unique objects in the supply chain within and across organisations.

About EPCglobal Inc:
EPCglobal Inc is a subsidiary of the global not-for-profit standards organization GS1, and supports the global adoption of the Electronic Product Code as industry-driven standards to enable accurate, immediate and cost-effective visibility of information throughout the supply chain.
