The lack of data accuracy in UK

As we all know data accuracy is one of the major issues in the UK supply chain today.

Tesco stated at a recent presentation that 40% of consumer unit dimensions from suppliers are in-correct. To understand how bad the problem is, the GS1 UK Data Synchronisation Group recently carried out a survey of UK retailers/foodservice operators and suppliers. The results were interesting and therefore I thought it would be useful to share them with you.

The following companies were involved in the survey

Retailers / Foodservice Operators - ASDA, Makro, Boots, Compass & Woodwards

Suppliers - Reckitt Benckiser, Proctor & Gamble, Heinz, Unilever, Nestle, R&R Ice-Cream, L'Oreal, Mars,

The key results from the survey were:

· Core data such as GTIN and dimensions are poorly communicated between suppliers and retailer/ foodservice operators. The impact to retailers is massive, the retailer is unable to order the product quickly, the retailer is unable to plan for their warehouse and store

· The full set of product information from suppliers is not available to retailers / foodservice operators. More and more retailers are requesting detailed information to meet consumer demands e.g. food allergen data. The issue is that the supplier finds it difficult to find the information within their systems.

· Data not delivered from suppliers in a timely manner. Typically a retailer requests product information from suppliers 20 weeks for a new product launch. The issue is the supplier doesn't have the information on the product at that time in the process. Basic information such as case size and pallet information is not available, so they give the retailer dummy data. The problem is that supplier doesn't update this information - so the retailer is using dummy data for warehouse management and supply chain processes.

Traceability regulation in the UK

EU food law states that all food products must be traceable by batch, lot or consignment at every stage of its lifecycle up to the point of sale.

GS1 standards can help companies to implement traceability systems. The GS1 System allows every product line, and every individual item or batch, to be identified uniquely. The information can be encoded in bar codes or RFID tags that can be scanned at any point in the supply chain

There's a lot of talk about sustainability at the moment. But isn't a green supply chain just an efficient supply chain in different clothing?

The goal of the GS1 UK Forum is to promote the broader adoption of global supply chain standards for the benefit of industry. As such, it is an open forum that can be used by GS1 UK members and non members who have an interest in improving the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of supply chains through the used of technologies such as bar code standards, RFID, eCom, GDS. It is a tool for connecting with others who may be facing similar challenges, to learn from their experiences, discuss solutions, opportunities or simply to network.

There are certain guidelines you should be aware of before you post messages. In general, our guidelines are based on the fundamentals of common sense, respect and tolerance. GS1 UK asks that its users do not post material that is abusive, defamatory, libelous, harassing, hateful, or obscene. We will take appropriate steps to keep discussion in line with these guidelines.

This is a public forum and generally members of the forum will police the community themselves. Community members must treat each other with respect .If you have any comment, question or issue with any post then please report it directly to the forum administrator

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

1.Respect the guidelines for forum usage, and site usage. Respect GS1 UK, its employees, volunteers, yourself, fellow community members, and guests on these boards.

2.You may not make personal attacks on other users or staff members either in public forums or private messages If you want to praise or criticise, give examples as to why it is good or bad, general attacks on a person or idea will not be tolerated.

4.Keep on topic: all threads should be part of the relevant forum and responses to a particular thread should be on-topic and pertain to the discussion. Users should use the New Topic button to start a new discussion which would otherwise be off-topic in the current thread. Threads that are off topic may be closed by the moderator.

6.Private Discussions: sometimes, a discussion thread strays off into a friendly dialogue or a heated debate among a very small number of users. For these exchanges, use the private messaging feature that is provided through the GS1 UK forums. Public forum posts should be reserved for matters of interest to the general community.

7.Posting Messages: posting the same message to many topics or boards is considered spam. Duplicate messages will be deleted or consolidated by our moderators. Remember to post in the correct forum, please do your best to post new topics to the appropriate forum board, moderators will move topics that are posted inappropriately.

8.Commercial Postings are not allowed. Commercial content as a direct or indirect (either intentional or non-intentional) attempt to solicit customers through a forum post will be edited or deleted. You may not advertise or promote illegal bar coding generation techniques and other companies or their products which may compete with those of GS1 UK. Notwithstanding the above, GS1 UK reserves the right to include limited commercial content in this Forum, in its sole discretion.

9. About our Moderators: Forum Moderators are community volunteers that give up their time to help build a better community. They will assist with focusing topics and enforcing guidelines. They have the ability to edit/delete posts, to move, close or delete topics, and to temporarily moderate users’ posts.

We reserve the right to ban any member who violates our guidelines or disrupts our community. We will be fair and provide warning in most cases.
