Electronic Messaging Standards

GS1 eCom provides global standards for electronic business messaging that allow rapid, efficient and accurate electronic transmission of agreed business data between trading partners for automatic processing.

GS1 UK has published three standards for electronic business messaging:

  • EANCOM
  • GS1 XML
  • TRADACOMS

For more information on GS1 UK's policy towards the ongoing development of these standards Click here

EANCOM
EANCOM is a widely used "traditional" EDI standard and provides a structured approach to communicating electronic business messages, enabling business partners to communicate business data rapidly, efficiently and accurately, irrespective of their internal hardware or software types.

GS1 XML
XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is designed specifically for information exchange over the internet. GS1 XML standards are becoming increasingly popular, providing a set of XML messages which can be used to communicate business transactions between trading partners electronically.

TRADACOMS

TRADACOMS is a "traditional" EDI standard used in multiple UK business sectors. TRADACOMS was developed specifically for the UK domestic market and unlike EANCOM and GS1 XML does not provide the functionality needed in international trade.

In September 2007, GS1 UK reissued code list 12 (VAT category codes) of the TRADACOMS
standard suite, for more information , click here
